Osaka

Japan's Kitchen

Eat, play, and discover the soul of Kansai

Osaka is Japan's third-largest city and its undisputed food capital. The local saying "kuidaore" — eat until you drop — captures the city's spirit perfectly. From sizzling takoyaki (octopus balls) on Dotonbori to refined Michelin-starred kappo cuisine, every meal here is an event.

But Osaka is far more than food. It's a city of warm, outgoing people (known across Japan for their friendliness and humour), a castle that tells the story of samurai power, a vibrant nightlife scene, and some of Japan's best shopping — from the neon arcades of Shinsaibashi to the vintage treasures of Amerikamura.

Osaka is also the gateway to Kansai — with Kyoto, Nara, and Kobe all within easy reach, it makes an ideal base for exploring western Japan.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (April) for castle cherry blossoms, Summer for festivals (Tenjin Matsuri is one of Japan's top three), Autumn for mild weather and colourful temples in nearby Minoo.
